Trip Schedule
Day 1: On arrival in Athens, you will be met and transferred to hotel. The rest of the day is free to head out and explore the city, an incredible contrast of the ancient and the modern.
Day 2: Early departure from Athens and driving along the mainland coast to Peloponnese, we will reach first the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus. One of the best Ancient Theatres worldwide. We will have a stop at one of the most romantic seaside towns of Greece, the first capital of Modern Greece, the city of Nafplio. We will continue with visit to the archaeological site of Mycenae. One of the most important Greek Ancient towns where we will admire the famous ‘Gate of Lions’ and the ‘Atreus King Tomb’. Our day itinerary will end for overnight at famous town of Sparta.
Day 2: Our day will start with visit of the Museum of Olive Oil of Sparta. Next, we will visit the Byzantine Medieval Castle Town of Mystras. We will travel in the past walking between the Upper and the Lower Town of the castle and admire the Palace of the Despots (Anaktora), the Houses of Laskaris and Frangopoulos, the beautiful Cathedral of Saint Dimitrios and the impressive Monasteries of Our Lady Pantánassa, and of Οur Lady Perivleptos. In continue we will visit the famous and mythical Castle Town of Monemvassia, known as ‘Gibraltar of the East’, nestled at the edge of a big rock by the sea that was founded by the Byzantines in the 6th century, occupied in the past by the Crusaders, the Venetians and the Turks. In the afternoon we will return in Sparta for overnight.
Day 3: Today we will leave Sparta to reach Ancient Olympia. On the road will have a short stop at the picturesque village of Gythio and Areopolis. We will visit Diros Caves known as the entrance to the underworld, famous for its marvelous subterranean caves surrounded by formations of stalactites with the underground river, accessible only by small boats and through narrow passageways we will see places of Paleolithic and Neolithic times. Then we will continue passing by coastal villages of Stoupa and Kardamili, Kalamata and finally arrive to the city of Ancient Olympia.
Day 4: Today we will visit the archaeological site of Ancient Olympia. The place that first Olympic Games took place ever. We will admire the Temple of Zeus, one of the most important and celebrated sanctuaries of ancient Greece, where was housing one Phidias creations, one of the 7 wonders of the Ancient World, the Gold and Ivory Statue of Zeus. We will visit Temple of Hera, Pelops Shrine, the house of Council where the athletes used to take the Olympic oath, the Treasury. We will see the Gymnasium and the Palestra where athletes used to exercise for a month before the Games and plenty of more. Then we will cross over one of the biggest bridges of Europe, the amazing Rio – Antirio. Finally, we will reach our next unique Castle town, the Naupactus. Seaside town surrounded by the Venetian Castle right next to the Venetian Port. Finally, we will arrive at Delphi for overnight.
Day 5: Today we will visit the archaeological site of Delphi with the unique and mythical Ancient Oracle, the Stadium, the Ancient Theatre and the Museum where between other archaeological monuments we will admire the unique bronze statue of ‘Charioteer’! In continue we will have a stop to visit the traditional village of Arachova to finally reach traditional town of Kalambaka, small town that lays in the foot of the breathtaking grey rocks and in the shadow of the Meteora Monasteries.
Day 6: Our last day of this unique road trip we will visit the monasteries of Meteora. All Monasteries are built on the top of gigantic rocks. First, we will visit the biggest and oldest Monastery of all, the Monastery of Great Meteoro and then the 16th century Monastery of St. Stephan. In continue we will return to Athens. On the way we will have a stop to admire statue of Leonidas at Thermopiles, there were 300 Spartans gave their final battle against thousands of soldiers of the Persian Empire. Arrival in Athens.
Day 7: check out and return flight back home.
